Angela Hillier, abstract painter originally from the Greater Ottawa Area, now resides in Victoria, BC. Drawing inspiration from her surroundings, she works primarily with geometric abstractions through self-reflection and memory. Creating imaginary worlds that defy reality, she expresses her experiences through the use of colour and its application. Through abstraction, Hillier experiments with materiality and process through using found materials and simplified designs focusing on layers. Hillier has exhibited in multiple venues throughout Ottawa, has participated in live painting with Art Battle Canada numerous times, and has been interviewed by CBC Radio, Guerilla Magazine, the University of Ottawa Gazette and the Nexus Newspaper. She now works with Art Battle Canada as a local partner in Victoria and Vancouver, BC organizing monthly live painting events in each city. For more info visit www.artbattle.ca
I paint so I can create imaginary worlds that cannot exist in reality. Starting with a blank surface, I enjoy constructing make-believe spaces that defy the confines of reality and allow the viewer a passageway into my mind. By creating spaces that are void of representation, it allows the viewer to create their own visual links to their memories and how they experience seemingly three-dimensional colour on a two-dimensional surface. I am currently focused on creating layers on wood panels. Using a variety of materials I am able to experiment with multiple reactions on the same surface. I am primarily interested in the concept of memory and how much changes over time. I document this process through layering personal memories represented through colour and its application. I work with constructing unreal spaces, either from nothing, or from the past.Overall, focusing on process and materiality, I comment on the past and how it is always ever-present through our memories.
